An exponent (the small number) tells you how many times to multiply the base (the big number) by itself. So 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.

2² = 4, 2³ = 8, 3² = 9, 3³ = 27. The exponent is written to the top-right of the base.

Examples
2³ = 8
3² = 9
4² = 16
