Did you know?
We do multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.
Parentheses tell us to do that part first: (2 + 3) × 4 = 20.

Read this if you're new to the topic—it will help you know what to do in each problem.

When an expression has more than one operation, we follow the order: parentheses first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.

Example: 2 + 3 × 4 = 2 + 12 = 14 (multiply first, then add). With parentheses: (2 + 3) × 4 = 5 × 4 = 20.

Examples
2 + 3 × 4 = 14
(6 − 2) × 3 = 12
